Just a Black girl with a Mexican Boyfriend: My Experience with Interracial Dating
Even though a majority of whites approve, they are somewhat less likely to approve of interracial dating than are blacks or Hispanics. Interracial and interethnic dating is not uncommon in the United States, according to self-reports in the survey. Slightly less than half of Americans say they have dated someone from a different racial or ethnic background, with Hispanics more likely than whites or blacks to say this. Younger Americans are much more likely to approve of interracial dating and to have dated someone from a different racial or ethnic background. Gallup’s annual Minority Rights and Relations poll delved into the topic of interracial dating to see whether Americans approve or disapprove of whites and blacks dating. One half of the sample, which included larger numbers of blacks and Hispanics than in a typical poll, was asked about a black man dating a white woman. The other half was asked about a white man dating a black woman. The difference is not statistically significant. The distinction between the race of the man and woman makes little difference for blacks and Hispanics, but appears to affect whites’ approval of interracial dating to a small degree. There are substantial differences by age in approval of interracial dating.

I have several Black girlfriends who are extremely sensitive to this issue. So sensitive, that it is hard to have a rational conversation about it without someone inevitably stomping off in tears. I also have known several White women who only date Black men. I think that I understand where Black women are coming from on this issue, but I can’t understand White women who only date Black men to save my life.
So, I hope that we can intelligently and respectfully discuss this issue because it is a big one. I live in Minneapolis and this city has a reputation for these types of relationships. Recently I posted an ad on Yahoo Personals. I posted several ads designed to attract different types. In one ad I specifically stated that I wanted to meet tall, educated, White men. Someone responded who said that he was English and that is in his words “a true White man.
What does everyone think about that theory? I hope that the men who are part of this discussion group participate in this thread too.

We conducted exploratory qualitative interviews with 60 HIV-uninfected heterosexual African-American women from rural counties in North Carolina and Alabama, and Hispanic women from an urban county in southern Florida.
Data were collected for relationship expectations; relationship experiences, and relationship power and decision-making. Interview transcripts underwent computer-assisted thematic analysis. We identified two overarching relationship themes: contradictions between relationship expectations and desires and life circumstances that negated such ideals, and relationship challenges. Within the contradictions theme, we discovered six subthemes: a good man is hard to find; sex can be currency used to secure desired outcomes; compromises and allowances for cheating, irresponsible, and disrespectful behavior; redefining dating; sex just happens; needing relationship validation.
The challenges theme centered on two subthemes: uncertainties and miscommunication, and relationship power negotiation. Gender differences in relationship intentions and desires as well as communication styles, the importance of emotional and financial support, and the potential for relationships to provide disappointment were present in all subthemes.

By Angela T. Statistically Black women and Asian men are the two most “single” groups of people in the United States. Often I have been asked by Black men and White women alike, ‘why don’t more Black women just date outside their race? Regardless of race there are certain attributes I want in a man that I’m in a relationship with; integrity and good character, nice teeth, confidence, self-respect, the ability to earn, provide, protect and a few other traits that my grandfather taught me a man should possess.
